Case Study: Marina Internet Solution

Background

Marinas already have many diverse needs for their data networks, including voice-over-IP communications, security systems, point-of-sale systems, and PCI compliant networks.  Further, more and more marina management software has moved to the cloud, making marina office connectivity a mission critical requirement.  Finally, it’s no longer enough for a marina to just provide slips for boats.  Customers want more features and amenities for their money.  One of the biggest asks is public WiFi and reliable network connectivity for slip-holders.

For most businesses, this wouldn’t seem like much of a challenge, but marinas are a different breed.  Complicating factors include the diverse terrain around marinas, as well as the challenge of providing network service across distances where it is impossible to install wired network infrastructure.

This case study will focus on a marina on the Occoquan River, who’s needs include providing network service for:

  • Multiple Office Locations

  • Six Floating Docks

  • Fuel and Pump-Out Dock

  • Connected and Secure Fuel Point-of-Sale Systems

  • Overcome Diverse and Challenging Terrain

Network Requirements:

  • Multiple VLANs: Office, Guest and PCI

  • Wired and WiFi Coverage Everywhere for All VLANs

  • Traffic Shaping to Prioritize Office Traffic

  • Provide Best WiFi Coverage for All Docks

  • Must be Secure and Fault Tolerant

  • 24/7 Proactive Network Monitoring to Detect Faults
